envolvimento do córtex visual nestes mecanismos.
A amplitude
No entanto, será necessário
There is significant evidence to suggest that the visual mechanisms that regulate refractive development are mainly localized in the retina, through the detection of defocus which induces a compensatory change in ocular growth. The main aim of this project was to assess the response of the retina and visual cortex to images degraded by optical blurring and equivalent digital blurring. The goal was to assess whether it is possible to measure variations in electrical activity with visual electrophysiology techniques in the presence or absence of light vergence information, and at the same time evaluate the involvement of the visual cortex in these mechanisms. Fifteen volunteers aged between 20 and 28 (23.29 ± 2.33 years), with no ocular and/or systemic pathologies, were recruited to undergo a visual examination followed by visual electrophysiology measurement. The pattern electroretinogram (pERG) and visual evoked potentials (VEP) were recorded simultaneously, with the induction of different optical defocus conditions of +0.75D and +1.50D and two supplementary stimuli digitally defocused with the same magnitude, obtained by convulsing original images with a wavefront incorporating defocus of the same value for a 6 mm diameter pupil. The results show a reduction in the implicit time of the P50 component of the pERG with increasing optical defocus in the absence of supplementary stimuli (p=0.003). The N35-P50 amplitude also decreases significantly with increasing optical defocus (p≤0.033). Unlike the results recorded in the pERG, there were no significant changes in VEP with increasing optical or digital defocus magnitude. However, there were statistically significant differences comparing optical and digital defocus in both the retina and the cortex (p≤0.028). These findings suggest the existence of differences in the electrical response of the retina and visual cortex to degraded images when the defocus contains light vergence information (optical defocus) and when it is not present (digital defocus). However, it will be necessary to carry out further studies to confirm whether there is a casual link between the presence or absence of light vergence information and the changes found in the electrophysiological response of the retina. |
