conhecidas, soluções do mercado e publicações científicas recentes.
The use of Cross Laminated Timber (CLT) in slab systems has aroused growing interest in the construction industry. The lower carbon footprint associated with the use of a natural, renewable and recyclable resource, wood, as well as the mechanical performance guaranteed by the orthogonal arranjement of lamellas, encourage the use of CLT in slab systems. However, the interest in using this material, which the first example dates just from 1994, is not yet accompanied by available knowledge, which results in a lack of regulations and recommendations that contributes to limiting its use. In this context, this dissertation aims to expand knowledge about the use of CLT as an material for slab systems, from its conception to its structural design. The following slab systems are studied in this dissertation: i) CLT slab; ii) CLT-concrete composite slab; iii) CLT ribbed plates, iv) Steel- timber composite slab. These systems were defined as a result of their greater use in known realisations, market solutions and recent scientific publications. In the first phase of this work, a description was given of the fundamental concepts relating to CLT and the respective slab systems, covering their functional characterisation and an analysis of the applicable design recommendations and methodologies. This was followed by the design and comparative study of the slab systems. The calculation methodology considered for the structural design of the slabs was presented, based on the recommendations provided in Eurocode 5 and in other standards/references specific to CLT and the slab system in evaluation. Based on the design methodology, a descriptive and comparative analysis of the slab systems was carried out, which consisted of studying the applicability and structural performance of the different slab solutions, considering two categories of use: domestic/residencial activities and offices. This study concluded that ribbed slab systems achieve greater free spans, with maximums of 14 meters for domestic/residencial activities and 13 meters for offices, while at the same time having a lower self-weight. The CLT and composite CLT-concrete slabs had maximum spans of 9 meters, with an associated lower thickness. The structural performance of the slab systems was globally marked by the strong limitation associated with the serviceability limit state. |
