Currently, there is significant pressure to seek sustainable and efficient solutions for the use of energy resources in buildings, given their substantial representation in energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. The preparation of hot water accounts for a significant portion of a building's energy consumption. This study aims to evaluate solutions for sanitary hot water generation in an elderly care home in order to optimize the contribution of renewable energies such as solar thermal and photovoltaic, taking into account the financial, environmental, and energy efficiency impacts of the identified solutions. To achieve this, the first step involved characterizing the building by identifying the climatic zone in which it is located and analysing its envelope and technical systems, including ventilation and fixed lighting. This approach enabled the dynamic multi-zone simulation of the building, resulting in the determination of thermal loads and climatization needs for the entire building. The analysis revealed a total heating power requirement of 83 kW and a cooling requirement of 192 kW, with heating needs of 29 MWh/year and cooling needs of 237 MWh/year. Followed the definition of the sanitary hot water generation solution, starting with the identification of the building's hot water consumption profile. This information allowed for the sizing of a solar thermal system supported by a natural gas boiler. The resulting system comprised 45 panels with a collection area of 113 m2, a 3,500 L storage tank, and a natural gas boiler with a power output of 45 kW. This solution achieved an energy class of B-, which is non-compliant with regulations, and resulted in equivalent CO2 emissions of 86,618 kg/year. Replacing the natural gas boiler with an heat pump led to a reduction of 2,782 kg/year in emissions while maintaining the non-compliant B- energy class. Additionally, the introduction of a photovoltaic solar system, considering the building's electrical power profile, allowed the attainment of a compliant B energy class and a reduction in emissions to 73,650 kg/year of CO2. This solution had a payback time of 8.92 years. Finally, an evaluation was conducted for a solution capable of achieving an A energy class. This led to a solution with a larger photovoltaic solar system, resulting in emissions reduction to 49,039 kg/year and a payback time of 8.98 years. |
