Tais perguntas tiveram diferentes finalidades, prevalecendo as
Communication has a fundamental role in the teaching and learning process. Questions are one of the most communication forms teachers use to structure their discourse. They allow the establishment of dynamics and promote interaction between the different classroom elements. This study aims to identify the contribution of questions to the learning of function topics in a 10th grade class. To accomplish this goal, the following research questions were formulated: (i) What kind of questions does the teacher promote in the different moments of a functions topic class?; (ii) How does the teacher use questions to clarify the students’ difficulties in the Functions learning?; (iii) What is the relationship between the type of teacher questions and the type of students answers the Functions learning?; (iv) What perceptions do students have about the contribution of questions in the Functions learning?. The pedagogical intervention was carried out in a 10th grade class of a school in the city of Braga, considering the teacher-student relationship, the selected tasks, and the exploratory teaching method. In order to answer the research questions, information was collected according to the following data collection methods: two questionnaires (initial and final); audio and video recordings of all the classes that integrated the pedagogical intervention; lesson plans and post-reflections; and the students' productions. Following the obtained results, it was found that the teacher’s questions vary between confirmation questions, focalization questions and inquiry questions. Such questions had different purposes, prevailing the inquiry questions. The questions that allowed testing the students’ knowledge gave the teacher and the student important information. The questions that focused the students’ attention on a specific detail allowed them to organize their reasoning and structure their answers. The questions that required the students to explain or justify their thoughts were the ones that contributed the most to the students’ reasoning development. In the Functions study topics, the students revealed some difficulties interpreting the enunciation, interpreting the meaning of variables, and identifying the dependent and independent variables. The graphic representation of Functions was also a challenging task for the student since they could not sketch the correct graphs or translate the information into the sketched graphs, most of the time. The teacher used questions to guide the students’ thoughts without reducing the level of cognitive requirement, aiding them in organizing their reasoning and focusing their attention on essential aspects to favour strategy building. Despite not verifying a linear relationship between the type of questions posed by the teacher and the type of answer given by the students, it was found that the inquiry questions were the ones that originated the most complete answers provided by the students. Meanwhile, most of the time, the confirmation questions were related to the shortest answers. The students pointed out several advantages of posing questions by either the teacher, the students themselves or the colleagues, from which they highlight the clarification of some doubts, the suppuration of difficulties, the reinforcement of the knowledge and the fact that it defies the mathematical reasoning. |
