This dissertation focuses on the study of papercrete, as a sustainable solution in construction. Therefore, the main objective of this dissertation focuses on the use of paper in the manufacture of more sustainable mortars, in order to use paper waste, as well as to reduce the use of sand and cement in construction. A material consisting of 2 types of paper was prepared: printing paper and kraft paper. Initially, the moisture content of the two types of paper was studied in order to analyse the best filtration time to which these materials should be subjected. Then, after selecting the 3 filtration times where more significant changes occur, the production of the first mortars was started. These mortars were designed using only one kind of paper (kraft paper), then the different filtration times, the different cement percentages, the use of adherent film in the curing of the material, as well as the use of an oven. After all the mixtures were finished, in order to evaluate which one could be used as a standard, they were tested to compression, where the material with the best behavior would be the one used in the remaining dissertation. After defining the standard mixture, more mortars were produced. In these, the type of paper was changed to printing paper, dry kraft paper was used and different volumes of sand were added to the printing paper mixtures, as well as to the kraft paper. Subsequently, these mixtures were tested in order to obtain their mechanical properties (bending and compression), water absorption capacity (immersion and capillarity) and thermal properties. Then, the results obtained were compared with materials used in construction, to analyze which could be their future applications. It was also analyzed the differences with other experiments performed with the same material, checking which was the best solution. The main conclusions drawn from this experimental work were that, although papercrete is a very light material with low mechanical strength, it can be used on site as an insulating or covering material, if it is applied indoors, as this material easily absorbs water. In relation to paper, both can be used and sand, despite removing mechanical resistance from the specimens, proved to be beneficial in retarding water absorption. |
