Due to the constant need to increasingly improve the mechanical behavior and also the structural responses, ways to improve their properties are constantly searched for and required such the mechanical strength, stiffness, energy and damping absorption capacity. Indeed, these properties can currently be acquired in different ways. Using lattice structures is an increasingly popular alternative. Design engineers usually use lattice structures for aerospace and automobile components, industrial machines, or in the biomedical area, in order to reduce the pieces’ weight, keeping the structural integrity and the necessary strength. The 3D lattice periodical structures have been highlighted. However, other types of cellular solids can be equally interesting. Thus, the present work purposes and presents a way to obtain 2D non-periodical lattice structures in order to produce microlattice beams, not only to assure the structural function but also to absorb the vibrations. The main goal is to deduce lattice ways of the micro beams by topology, defining optimization routines to reduce the mass and emulate the variation of the stiffness of the structure during the obtaining process of the lattice structures. To achieve the purpose objective, the Topology Optimization tool of the Ansys software was used considering two modes: the Static Structural and the Modal. This methodology allows comparing the results of the optimized microlattice beams in both modes and evaluating which are the better shapes, with higher stiffness, the best stiffness-mass ratio and which are the best method (static or modal). From the optimisation results with the manufacturing constraint, the topology of the micro beam with the real percentage of 44% was selected considering the static study. From the dynamic study, the micro beam with the real percentage of 68% was selected. Thus, it is suggested that these microstructures obtained with a cellular solid configuration can be a solution to obtain high static and dynamic mechanical properties and, at the same, lightweight characteristics. Regarding the manufacturing of the microlattice structures, it is purposed and used an innovative additive manufacturing assisted investment casting technique. The work shows that the manufacturing process developed for the considered microlattice structures still needs to be improved considering some aspects mainly related to the elimination of the resin and the study of its thermal cycle. |
