A literacia financeira ganhou especial
Recently, the number of financial decisions has increased, so people need more financial knowledge. One indicator of financial knowledge is the level of financial literacy. Financial literacy has become especially important because more financially literate people are more informed and prepared to make financial decisions and therefore increase their financial well-being. The purpose of this paper is to determine the impact of financial literacy of the Portuguese population on financial decision-making, such as emergency saving, retirement planning, and investing. Also, to assess how the level of perceived financial literacy is related to the effective level of financial literacy and to identify discrepancies between the two. Therefore, I developed an online survey consisting of 26 questions. The survey was distributed through the University of Minho's mailing lists and in some social media networks. The study sample consisted of 138 reliable questionnaires, in which the majority (63.8%) were women, and the average age was 31.5 years. The obtained results show that the level of effective financial literacy of the sample is average, 3.09 out of 5 points. I have found that people with higher levels of financial knowledge are more likely make decisions about saving for retirement and investing. That is, the level of financial literacy positively influences more complex financial decision making. According to the results of this research, it turned out that the self-esteem of the majority of the subjects corresponds to their real result. But there is also a more vulnerable part that overestimates their knowledge, although they have a low level of effective financial literacy. When studying the sources of financial information, it was found that the greatest influence on the level of financial literacy is exerted by such a source as self-education. |
