A temperatura é bastante
Energy efficiency in the automotive industry is a pressing issue these days due to the requirements imposed by emissions targets. Conventional means of producing on-board electrical power, such as the alternator, rely on mechanical energy produced by the engine. However, there is a high potential for Exhaust waste heat energy recovery that is not being harnessed. The temperature is quite high and the thermal power existing in the exhaust gases is about the same magnitude as the useful power in the internal combustion engine. Exhaust gas energy can be used in an innovative way by converting heat into electrical energy using thermoelectric generators (TEG) with no moving parts. To be efficient, they need to work close to their temperature limit, without, however, exceeding it. One way of ensuring this, is to provide exhaust heat by means of a phase change phenomenon with controlled saturation temperature through variable conductance thermosiphons. This work is mostly experimental and is based on an existing prototype, present in the engines laboratory, previously developed by Exhaust2Energy project. Several experimental tests were made in order to optimize this thermoelectric temperature control generator (TCTG) by changing some variables, namely the use of gases such as air, helium and argon at different starting pressures, different engine operating speeds and by changing the direction of gas flow in the prototype. The results obtained indicate that a better stratification of the gases was achieved, allowing a better heat distribution by the TEG according to the available heat and better heat transfer, allowing an increase in the generated power and efficiency of the system. Changes in the design and conception of the prototype to allow higher heat absorption and equipment that allow higher thermal loads are suggestions for future work. |
