The font-size effect refers to when words presented in larger font size are considered more memorable than words in smaller font size, although their later recall are equivalent. A possible explanation for this effect may come from the belief that the font size represents the importance of the word. The objective of this study was to understand if words in larger font size are considered more memorable because they are more important. In Study 1, the participants observed a set of words presented in different font sizes (18pt and 150pt) associated to different values of importance (1 and 6) regarding the recall of the word. After each word, participants rated the probability to recall the word later (judgments of learning). After that, they completed a recall memory test. The results showed that font size and importance seem to have the same impact in the judgments of learning and in memory. In Study 2, the importance associated to the words was increased (1 and 12) to increase their salience. The results however, stayed identical to Study 1. Overall, the results suggest that the importance may not be an explanation for the font-size effect. |
