A representação transgressiva do feminino através do questionamento da identidade e da criação artística na obra de Ali Smith

Abstract

Esta dissertação investiga as obras mais recentes de Ali Smith, nomeadamente How to Be Both (2014), Autumn (2016), Winter (2017) e Spring (2019), e a relação que estas estabelecem entre o conceito de género e as artes visuais. Através da análise do contexto cultural e sociopolítico das narrativas de Ali Smith, este trabalho irá explorar detalhadamente a ficção da autora e o seu lugar de indiscutível relevância na literatura contemporânea britânica, nomeadamente no contexto do Brexlit. Para esse efeito, numa primeira parte será explorado o estilo narrativo de Ali Smith, assim como a presença incontornável do Pós-modernismo na sua obra. De seguida, o romance How to Be Both servirá como exemplo da exploração interartística, foco privilegiado no trabalho da autora. Na segunda parte desta investigação serão analisados os romances Autumn e Winter, assim como a influência que as artistas Pauline Boty e Barbara Hepworth tiveram na sua construção narrativa. Finalmente, e ainda neste capítulo, será explorado o romance Spring como um exemplo duma nova corrente literária, denominada de Brexlit, que surgiu em resposta à saída do Reino Unido da União Europeia.

This dissertation will investigate the most recent works of Ali Smith, namely How to Be Both (2014), Autumn (2016), Winter (2017) and Spring (2019), and the relation that they establish with gender and the visual arts. Through the analysis of the cultural and sociopolitical context of Ali Smith's narratives, this investigation will further explore her fiction and its leading role in contemporary British literature. To that end, the first part of this dissertation will explore the style and complex aesthetics of Ali Smith, as well as the paramount influence of Postmodernism in her work. Furthermore, the novel How to Be Both will be our main case study for the interartistic approach that the author strategically uses when constructing her narratives. The second part of this dissertation will analyse the novels Autumn and Winter, as well as the influence that modernist women artists such as Pauline Boty and Barbara Hepworth had on their construction. Lastly, the novel Spring will be used as an example of a new literary tendency, referred to as Brexlit, that came to the light in response to the dramatic withdrawal of the United Kingdom from the European Union.
