Self-harm behaviours include a wide range of forms of physical harm, and can be performed in more severe (e.g., self-strangulation) or less severe (e.g., burns) behaviours. Inside prison, the high frequency of such acts, as well as its predictive relevance in subsequent suicide, make the phenomenon a source of concern, therefore its reduction is very important. Prison guards are particularly important in identifying and managing prisoners at risk, and it is therefore essential to understand their attitudes towards prisoners who self-harm. The study took a random sample of 176 prison guards from prisons in the north of the country, who filled the scale of attitudes towards prisioners who self-harm along with a scale of attitudes towards prisioners. The results reveal that these express negative attitudes towards prisioners who self-harm, regardless of the sociodemographic variables that were selected (age, sex, marital status, schooling and years of professional experience). It was also found that guards who exhibit generally positive attitudes towards prisoners disregard less these prisoners in particular. The results have to be interpreted taking into account the limitations of the scale, so future research should try to reproduce this research, in order to obtain a more robust reliability of the instrument. |
