The purpose of this dissertation is to analyse the influence that media in general and television in particular, as a product of post-modernity, can produce while being vehicles of socialization and identity definition in individuals. At the same time, and contrary to what the post-modern approach claims, it is suggested that such influence might not be entirely innocuous. The concept of Post-modernity and the theoretical propositions of the Critical Theory, in line with the concept of cultural industry, are the foundations for this discussion. The aim of this study is to understand the influence that reality shows have on the thoughts and behaviours of the viewers. In that sense, the following hypothesis is proposed: cultural reception of shows that are abundant in banalities and lack in content has the potential to alienate the mentioned population. |
