In the last decades, the fibre reinforced polymers (FRP) have been used to strengthen existing reinforced concrete (RC) structures. Among the most used strengthening techniques are (i) the EBR (Externally Bonded Reinforcement), which consists on bonding the FRP material to the surface of the elements to be strengthened and (ii) the NSM (Near Surface Mounted), which consists on inserting the FRP material in pre-cut grooves opened in the concrete cover of the elements to be strengthened. The present dissertation is part of the FRPLongDur research project which aims to study the durability of RC structures strengthened with FRP systems. This work is composed of a wide set of preliminary studies and intends to clarify some doubts about: (i) the geometry and test configurations, (ii) the differences between strengthening solutions using CFRP laminates, (iii) the influence of some parameters on the behaviour of strengthened elements. The study carried out is composed of an experimental part and a numerical part. The experimental work includes two types of tests: (i) direct pullout tests in order to study the bond behaviour of the EBR CFRP system and (ii) flexural tests on RC slab strips strengthened with EBR and NSM systems. The experimental setup for bond test was developed within the scope of this work and its good performance was verified. In these tests, the following variables were considered: (i) the methods for surface preparation (GR – Grinding and SB – Sand blasting) and (ii) the bond length (150, 200 e 250 mm). The results showed that the higher level of roughness provided by the sandblast preparation allowed to improve the bond behaviour and bond strength. Recognizing the influence of surface roughness, an analytical formulation capable of predicting bond strength in function of this parameter was proposed. Regarding of the flexural tests on strengthened RC slab strips, the following variables were considered: (i) the width of CFRP laminate with the EBR system, (ii) the different strengthened solutions with the NSM system, which used the same amount of composite material but with different arrangements along the cross section of the slab’s strip. The results demonstrated a greater efficiency of the NSM system with respect to the EBR system. The global behaviour of RC slabs strengthened with the NSM system was improved when the composite material was more distributed along its cross section. Using the software Femix 4.0, all the experimental tests were simulated, verifying the ability of the current FEM tools to predict the behaviour of this type of structural elements. The calibration of the models will allow the performance of parametric studies and, consequently, the analysis of the influence of several parameters on their response. |
