práticas no contexto educativo.
The definition of intelligence, its evaluation and its differentiation throughout individuals’ life span have dominated the history of psychological investigation in this area, becoming one of the most studied dimensions and, at the same time, one of the most controversial. One of the oldest questions that remain without a linear response is whether intelligence can be better defined as a general factor or as a set of differentiated cognitive abilities that can be understood as autonomous or correlated and interdependent according to hierarchical levels of greater or lesser generalization. Accepting the relevance of the cognitive abilities in the explanation of the levels of learning and students’ academic success or failure, it is important to clarify the patterns of their development in order to better guide the practice in the educational context. Thus, with this thesis, elaborated from the compilation of published papers, we tried to describe the profile of cognitive abilities in a group of children with ages of 5, 7 and 9 (N = 470). The main results, obtained in the Cognitive Competencies Scale for Children from 4 to 10 years (ECCOs 4/10) show that, in this age group, the general intelligence factor still assumes a preponderant role in the explanation of the cognitive structure. However, there is space for some differentiation found through the verbal and non-verbal content of the tasks. The organization of cognitive abilities seemed better defined by a hierarchical model, defining a second-order factor based on the high correlations between primary factors. On the other hand, the cognitive age differentiation hypothesis was not confirmed in this study considering the observed invariance of the cognitive structure throughout the three age groups. It is possible that this specialization of the cognitive abilities occur in more advanced ages in function of learning experiences, interests and motivations more differentiated from the adolescence. Finally, our results showed that the impact of non-cognitive variables on the explanation of children's cognitive performance was small, with the exception of the sibship size that assumed some relevance. In general, this study contributes to a renewed reading about the organization of the cognitive abilities in childhood, suggesting new concerns in the assessment of intelligence by psychologists. |
