status social, estado nutricional e insatisfação corporal.
diferentes contextos.
The literature has pointed several variables that characterize the profiles of bullying participants, among which are: sex, age, motor performance, school performance, social status, nutritional status and body dissatisfaction. In order to test these possible associations in different cultures, making sure that in fact these are features present in the profiles of those involved in bullying, this study aimed to analyse and to compare the possible roles of participation in school bullying in children and adolescents from three distinct countries (Brazil, Portugal and Australia) and in different contexts. Participated 950 children and adolescents from 3rd to 6th year, of public and private schools from Brazil, Portugal and Australia. The instruments used were: Olweus Questionnaire, Peer Relations Questionnaire and Sociometric Scale; KTK; Social Status Subjective Scale in Classroom; body weight and height; and Body Silhouette Scale. Regarding the results, Study I, shows that the type of aggression with the highest occurrence was the verbal type, in the three participating countries, and that there were no associations between being bullied and the country of origin, type of school and sex. Study II, points that bullying occurred more frequently during morning breaks. When analysed the involvement of roles in the bullying of all participants, an association was found between being alone and being a bully-victim. Study III, indicates an association between motor performance and school bullying, in which the victims most likely have a motor performance below average. Study IV, shows that regarding school performance and the roles of involvement in bullying, only in Portugal the victims showed better school performance in relation to bullies and bully-victims in all subjects. Study V highlights that in Portugal, the victims were considered popular and also rejected. In Brazil, popularity was only associated to the bullies. In Study VI, the results indicated that bullying participants in Portugal and Brazil did not differ in relation to body dissatisfaction. Moreover, higher body dissatisfaction with thinness has been linked to the role of bully-victim in school bullying. Finally, in Study VII, the only pattern between Portugal and Brazil was the rejection of the bully-victims. However, rejection was also associated with victims in Portugal, and popularity was associated with bullies and bully-victims in Brazil. It was also found that in Portugal the victims showed better school performance and the boys are less likely to be victimised. In Brazil the bully-victims had lower motor performance than expected for their age. It concludes that some characteristics of the participants of this phenomenon tend to vary according to the social and cultural context of each country, influencing the determination of social standards established by peers in schools. However, other characteristics seem to be part of a pattern of behaviour involved, regardless of the country of origin. Therefore, it is recommended that more cross-cultural studies are carried out by analysing the relationship between bullying and the variables cited in the literature for children and adolescents. Then, it will be possible to check if the results are specific to this study group or reflects the profile of those involved in bullying in these countries. |
