This study aims to analyze the process and scope of the cooperation between external and internal audit functions, and realize the benefits that result from this cooperation. Several international organisms, including the IFAC and the IIA, as well as the international literature, suggest that the cooperation between external and internal audit activities should be promoted, giving the benefits that result from that cooperation to both auditors and organizations. Consistently with international studies, the results obtained from the case study made in this report demonstrate that the cooperation between the internal and external audit activities results in benefits both for internal and external auditors and for the auditee. For internal and external audit activities, the most important benefits are the elimination of duplication of audit functions and the economy of time and resources, and the gains and share of knowledge. The main benefits to the audited company are the risk reduction, with all the advantages associated with it, such as improving the quality of financial reporting, the prevention and detection of fraud and an improvement in the scope of the audit. The reduction in the delay in delivery of the external audit report and the improvement of the conflict between reliability and timeliness of financial information are also recognized as important benefits to the auditee. |
