The current dissertation, held at the final stage of the Master Degree in Industrial Engineering and Management, describes an evaluation and improvements over the production system of the painting area from a furniture company, the Ikea Industry Portugal. This individual work aims to help the company in a way that they can easily provide to their costumers cheaper and better quality products. Overall, it was necessary to contribute to a reduction of the defects and increase the company productivity and efficiency. One of the answers found for this constant necessity is the rationalization of processes and consequent reduction of the production cost, which can be found on the “Lean Manufacturing” philosophy. This Japanese methodology is already present throughout the production system of the Ikea Industry Portugal, but as this is a philosophy of continuous improvement it’s crucial for the whole system that new evaluations and consequent improvements keep happening. With this in mind, the first stage of this study underwent through a thorough examination of the production system, with a special care for seeking new improvements related to the objectives set. As a result of this analysis, problems like a large number of defected products, bottleneck in production and wrong working posture, among others, were noticed. In the second stage of this study there was an evaluation of the problems founded and its origins. The third and last stage of this work was related to a study of proper tools developed in the Lean Philosophy and Industrial Ergonomics that would handle these problems and would fulfill the intended goals of this dissertation. In this way, tools like Standard Work, Automations, Poka-Yoke devices and Ergonomics in the work stations were use. Then, with the permission of the company, some of these lean tools were implemented and the results were collected and converted to an annual gain. In short, this project has a total gain of 61.771,90 Euros per year, taking into account the production related to the current year. |
