Resumo(s): | O presente estudo pretende analisar a estrutura do sistema bancário da União
Europeia.
The present study intends to analyze the structure of the European Union Banking System. To reach this goal we selected a set of independent variables, namely the number of credit institutions, the number of bank employees, the amount of deposits, the amount of bank loans and gross domestic product; and we analyze their effects on the variable that we consider a better representation of the structure of the banking system: the Size of Assets. This study comprehends the period 1999 to 2014 and includes eight countries that amount about 80% of total assets of the European Union: Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, Spain and Portugal as countries of the euro zone, and also, the UK and Sweden. As analytical tools we used Pearson Correlation Coefficient, the Coefficient of Determination and the Global Significance Test. The results seem to show that the number of credit institutions in the economy tends to affect negatively the size of assets of the country, but the same does not happen with those variables mentioned above that show a positive association with this indicator. Among the variables studied, we emphasize the positive influence that bank loans seem to have with the size of banking assets, demonstrating the relevance of the traditional activity of the credit institutions. |
