Entre a clausura e o século : o recolhimento de Santo António do Campo da Vinha sob a administração da Misericórdia de Braga (séculos XVII-XVIII)

Abstract

Ancorado na vaga de moralidade feminina que se abateu sobre a Europa ocidental com o Concílio de Trento, o recolhimento de Santo António conheceu o seu início na década de setenta de século XVI, sob a iniciativa de Domingos Peres, abade da igreja paroquial de S. João de Balança, do concelho de Terras de Bouro. Localizado no Campo da Vinha, na cidade de Braga, destinava-se a acolher seis mulheres honradas e devotas, a quem chamavam “beatas”. Apesar de remontar à centúria de quinhentos, o nosso foco de análise situa-se no período correspondente à administração da instituição pela Misericórdia de Braga, a quem o legatário incumbiu o seu governo, designadamente, entre 1608, ano da morte de Domingos Peres, e o final do século XVIII, apesar de o recolhimento só vir a ser extinto em 1911, na sequência da lei da Separação do Estado das Igrejas. É nosso objetivo principal analisar o modus vivendi das mulheres que sucessivamente habitaram o recolhimento, atentando sobre o seu quotidiano, vivências interiores, relações sociais e pessoais, na tentativa de perceber de que forma os preceitos orientadores da instituição se refletiram nos comportamentos mulheris. Procuramos analisar o seu tecido populacional, na tentativa de compreender as razões que levaram estas mulheres a entrarem na instituição. Neste percurso pela história do recolhimento, realçaremos os procedimentos levados a cabo pela Misericórdia no cumprimento dos objetivos que presidiram à sua fundação, analisando os problemas com que se depararam os órgãos gerentes na sua administração, bem como as estratégias encontradas pelos mesmos na tentativa de os solucionar.

Anchored in the wave of female morality, that struck Western Europe with the Council of Trent, the shelter of Santo António saw its beginning in the seventies of the sixteenth century, under the initiative of Domingos Peres, abbot of the parish church of S. João de Balança, in the municipality of Terras de Bouro. Located in Campo da Vinha, in the city of Braga, was designed to accommodate six devout and honorable women, whom they called "beatas". Despite being in the sixteenth century, the focus of our analysis lies in the management of the institution corresponding to the Misericórdia de Braga, where the caliph instructed his government, namely, between 1608, the year of death of Domingos Peres, and the late eighteenth century, despite the shelter having only become extinct in 1911, following the law of the Separação do Estado das Igrejas. It is our main objective to analyze the modus vivendi of women who successively inhabited the shelter, focusing on their daily life, inner experiences, social and personal relationships, in an attempt to understand how the guiding principles of the institution were reflected in feminine behaviors. We tried to analyze its population´s tissue in an attempt to understand the reasons that led these women to enter the institution. In this journey through the history of the shelter, we will highlight the procedures carried out by Misericórdia in compliance with the objectives that guided its foundation, analyzing the problems encountered by managers in their governance, as well as the strategies found by them in the attempt to solve such problems.
