promover.
The following dissertation aims at deepening the current knowledge on the personal social networks of children, with ages between 6 to 12 years, that are temporarily sheltered by foster homes. More specifically, it is intended: a) to characterize the children’s personal social network pages, b) assess the importance that these institutions ascribe to these personal social networks; and c) to characterize the strategies that they develop with the aim of promoting them. The starting point is the conceptualization of Personal Social Network by Sluzki (1998), operationalized by the "Instrument of Evaluation of Personal Social Network – Reviewed" (IARSP-R) and respective "Map of Personal Social Network", adapted by Alarcão e Sousa (2007), and deepened by semi-structured interview to the technical staff from four Temporary Children’s Homes, that give shelter to thirty six children between the ages described. The results of this investigation allowed, with the technical staff perspective, to characterize the personal social network of these children as small, cohesive, mixed, demographically heterogeneous and multidimensional/versatile, with a close geography and daily presence in their lives. Characterized by the reciprocity, they allow high emotional support and social company to the child, over technical or financial support that is glaringly scarce or inexistent. The temporary children’s homes attribute different levels of importance to the family, to friends/colleges of study, to the institution and to the surrounding community, making the children’s life project to work primordially as an independent variable. The main strategies adopted by the institutions to promote the children’s personal social networks involve the incentive towards interpersonal relationships, the primacy given to the life project as an organizing axis of intervention, an annual planning of activities/events, the facilitating opportunities for life experiences and qualified experiences and the articulation of the social and educational dimension in the promotion of networks. |
