The technological breakthrough in the information processing and transmission, characteristics of the Information Society, was stimulated by the adaptation and employ of the Internet as the information transmission mean by excellency. This trend brought important advantages for financial information users that gained access to the information in a faster and easier way. The XBRL language revolutionized the financial reporting and information decision making processes. Its purpose is to assist all the intervenient in the financial information disclosure process to create, share and analyze the information. Based in XML language, XBRL improves the quality of the information and maximizes its utility, enabling cost reductions. With XBRL, each financial element is represented in a unique tag, allowing automatic manipulation of information and information sharing between multiple software systems. Thus, financial reporting may be more frequent and, with the increased accessibility to the information, the users may evaluate companies performances in a more effective and incisive way. Nevertheless, XBRL adoption is still reduced, being still considered a technology restricted to software developers. Our study is essentially focused in the adequacy analysis of the IFRS-GP 2005 taxonomy to the financial statements of the companies that comprise the PSI-20 index as of December, 31st, 2005. To accomplish this, we verified if the taxonomy included the elements disclosed in those financial statements. The results of the study demonstrate that the adjustment is not perfect. We identified missing elements in the taxonomy, necessary to the financial reporting of the Portuguese companies in general. As such, in order to guarantee a higher adequacy level and thus increase the quality of the disclosed financial information, these elements should be included in the national extension of the referred taxonomy. |
