produtos e a consciencialização ambiental.
We are constantly living above the capacity of the earth, consuming more than our planet can regenerate and harming future life. One of the most polluting industries in the world is the textile industry and, in this sense, searching for the best alternatives for the issues related to pollution and excessive consumption. Second-hand clothes emerge in this context and are a constantly growing phenomenon. Therefore, this study has the goal to understand the consumers' perceptions, attitudes and behaviors in relation to the service of buying and selling second-hand clothing, and in particular, the motivations and barriers felt when choosing these products. A qualitative methodology is adopted, where the data collection technique is based on 10 in-depth interviews with a convenience sample, 1 focus group and 4 non-participatory observation in second-hand clothing stores. We also resort to a thematic analysis as support to analyze the results obtained in the different selected methodologies. Then we seek, in the first phase, to explore consumers' consumption habits, and we realized that there is still a great desire to buy clothes, considering that nowadays consumers are increasingly rethinking their choices. Consumers' perception of the real impact of their behavior on the environment may still not be realistic, for various reasons, including a lack of information and knowledge about the products and the various alternatives that exist. The overall perception, of the interviewees/focus group participants about buying and selling second-hand clothes, is mostly positive, as they consider it to be a growing sector that can help improve sustainability issues. There are some advantages and barriers presented to buying and selling second-hand clothes, as motivating factors, we have the question of price, exclusivity of some products, and environmental awareness. On the other hand, the presented barriers are the difficulty in finding pieces you like, the fact that they have been worn by others and the effort and time invested that buying second-hand clothes can require. As such, the results suggest that there should be more publicity about the stores and the advantages of these products, there should be more stores, but more organized ones that attract customers. Finally, brands are referred to as empowering this system, since they are a link of trust for many consumers and can easily promote this change of a more conscious behavior. |
