Automatic phonological analysis of the linguistic productions of Portuguese children with and without language impairment

Abstract

Automatic phonological analysis is still little used by speech-language therapists despite the numerous advantages it represents over the tradicional manual analysis. This work aimed to stimulate its use for clinical and/or research purposes by demonstrating how the use of the Automatic Phonological Analysis Tools (APAT) allows to reliably differentiatethe linguistic productions of Portuguese children with Development Language Disorder (DLD) from those with typical language development. Specifically, results showed significant differences between the two groups in several measures of severity, namely in Percentage of Correct Consonants (PCC) and Percentage of Correct Vowels (PVC), as well as in the percentage of occurrence of phonological processes. These findings show that the use of the APAT allows not only a deeper understanding of the phonological characteristics of Portuguese children with typical and atypical language development, but also to support professionals in the identification/diagnosis of these children and in the planning of the intervention.

A análise automática das alterações fonológicas é ainda pouco usada por terapeutas da fala (TF) pese embora as inúmeras vantagens que o seu uso representa face à tradicional análise manual. Com este trabalho procuramos contribuir para estimular a sua utilização entre a comunidade de TF ao demonstrar como o recurso às Ferramentas de Análise Fonológica Automática (FAFA) permitem diferenciar de forma válida as produções linguísticas de crianças portuguesas com Perturbação do Desenvolvimento da Linguagem (PDL), das de crianças com desenvolvimento típico de linguagem (DTL). Especificamente, a comparação dos resultados obtidos a partir das FAFA mostrou diferenças significativas entre os dois grupos em diversas medidas de severidade, nomeadamente ao nível da Percentagem de Consoantes Corretas (PCC), Percentagem de Vogais Corretas (PVC), bem como na percentagem de ocorrência de processos fonológicos. Estes resultados demonstram que o uso das FAFA permitem não só conhecer de forma mais aprofundada as características fonológicas de crianças portuguesas com desenvolvimento típico e atípico de linguagem, mas também apoiar os profissionais na identificação/diagnóstico precoce dessas crianças e no planeamento da intervenção.
