as primeiras.
Abuse is prevalent in all age, ethnic, cultural and socioeconomic groups, and affects the way of being and living of those who have experienced it. The consequences of this crime are countless, both in the short and long term. This research sought to understand the experience of maternity among women and their conceptions about the experience of maternity among victims of sexual abuse, especially the effects that this experience may have on the development and education of their children. In this study, we worked with a sample of 6 women between 27 and 44 years old with children aged between 1 year and 24 years old, and most of them (4 women) were married. They were interviewed, with questions about sexual abuse, maternity and the way they influence the children's development and education, and a short version of the Parenting Styles and Parenting Dimensions Questionnaire (PSDQ) of Robinson, Mandleco, Olsen and Hart (2001). From these working tools, it was concluded that sexual abuse is a relevant indicator with great influence on the experience of motherhood, namely in the consequences it brings to the development and education of children. Furthermore, it was found that mothers, regardless of having been abused or not, tend to have a pessimistic view and disbelief in the world, due to the fear that their sons and daughters may experience this crime. This fear makes them distrust their own family members, especially if this abuse has occurred at an intrafamilial level. It was also observed that mothers tend, in general, to consider themselves and the abused mothers to have an authoritative style when raising their children, however, the latter tend to be, according to the participants, more rigid and protective than the former. This study, despite its limitations, has important implications for the education of mothers, sexually abused or not, since it evidenced the empathy and sorority of non abused women with abused mothers, enhancing the creation of support networks, as well as training the adoption of more positive educational styles. |
