For the purpose of achieving sustainable economic growth, it is imperative to establish a robust financial system that can withstand the inherent fluctuations. Within the academic literature, there are authors who assert that the financial system significantly influences the economic performance, while others argue that it bears no impact. Furthermore, certain authors conclude that such an impact exists, but its magnitude is contingent upon the level of development within respective countries. Hence, the primary objective of this investigation is to examine the relationship between economic growth and the corresponding financial system, focusing specifically on Portugal, Germany, Spain, France, Italy, the Netherlands, and the United Kingdom between the years 1996 and 2021. By thoroughly analyzing a spectrum of economic indicators, such as the growth rate of GDP per capita, volume of traded shares, domestic credit, foreign direct investment, public expenditure, population growth, inflation rate, and degree of openness, this study aims to gain a comprehensive understanding of the actual effects exerted by each of these factors on the economy. Subsequently, it endeavors to ascertain the significance of such effects. Within the empirical analysis framework, a multitude of comprehensive and partial tests were conducted. The findings of this study indicate that the financial system of the aforementioned economies does not exhibit a substantial impact on the growth of their respective economies. |
