Objective: Analysis the effect of exposure to ultraviolet C radiation in ophthalmic lenses. Methods: 9 pairs of ophthalmic lenses were used in this work, made of different materials (consisting of acrylic and polycarbonate), with anti-scratch, anti-reflection and blue filter coatings. Of each pair, one lens was kept in the dark protected from electromagnetic radiation, while the other lens was systematically exposed to UVC radiation for 3 weeks. The transmittance of each lens, the whitening index, the yellowing index and the similarity index were calculated over a 3-week period, estimated from transmittance measurements. To conduct measurements, 4 moments were considered: at the beginning of the experimental procedure and the end of each last week. Results: The stability over time in transmittance, whitening, yellowing, and similarity index is transversal to all lenses kept in the dark. As for lenses exposed to UVC, there are changes in some of the lenses, particularly in the transmissibility and yellowing index of acrylic and polycarbonate lenses with anti-scratch treatment. In the remaining lenses there were no measurable changes. Conclusions: Changes in ophthalmic lenses exposed to UVC depend on their materials and on the treatments that may exist on the lens, and the ones that seems to present more changes are the scratch resistant acrylic and polycarbonate lenses. |
