representativa e significativa, influente e cativante.
A few decades ago, ugliness has insinuated itself into the world of advertising. Its introduction into advertising has shaken up by the established dogmas. The conception of beauty as the norm for advertisements has aspired to commercial success by distilling moments of happiness that left to be no longer the norm. The principle of infinite success in advertising came to be changed. The changing of paradigm in sales arguments as well as in advertising are explained by economic reasons, but also by historical and cultural causes. If ugliness can be assumed in many forms, fact that has been able to penetrate advertising, it is because these forms represent archetypes, great original images that exist in the collective unconscious, that are manifested in dreams and storytelling’s as well as in literature and art. Nowadays, it is both traditional media, like television, and the so-called interactive media that convey these archetypal images on which advertising, and more specifically car advertising, feeds. Even if the advent of new technologies has brought more appealing communicative formats, it is on television advertising that our work focuses. This continues to be representative and significant, influential and captivating. We analysed a series of television advertisements that stage the ugly to value in the most wide-ranging car brands. Precisely, brands are preponderant in advertising, not only for the product itself, but also for what they represent for consumers in terms of social status. It is through the good use of ugliness in advertising that a brand becomes simultaneously a source of identification of individuals with the product sold and by its distinction in relation to others. Attraction combines with repulsion, like beauty with ugliness. Consequently postmodernity is the era of interdependence and even of the coincidence of opposites. |
