Grande do Norte, Brasil.
Grande do Norte.
The present work aimed to identify the Augmentative and Alternative Communication Systems (AACS) used by teachers who support students with Special Educational Needs (SEN) in the Initial Years of Elementary School in the context of the Covid-19 pandemic in the state of Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil. The methodology adopted was of a qualitative nature with the application of a semi-structured interview carried out with 6 male and female teachers who supported children with SEN between 6 and 10 years of age in the Initial Years of Elementary School. The objectives of the study were the following: a) to analyze the knowledge and training of teachers from the Early Years of Rio Grande do Norte regarding AACS in the support and care of children with SEN; b) identify the AACS used and technological resources implemented by teachers with children with SEN from the Early Years of Rio Grande do Norte during the Covid-19 pandemic; and c) to know the perceptions of teachers about the implementation of AACS during the period of the pandemic in the state of Rio Grande do Norte. The main results of the study allowed us to conclude that the beginning of classes after the announcement of the Covid-19 pandemic occurred in different ways in schools. In general, participants understand the AACS as a facilitator for communication and help to support learning. A total and/or partial lack of knowledge about the AACS by the interviewees was verified. With regard to training in AACS, we found that some of the participants did introductory continuing training in AACS, however, it did not occur during 2020 and 2021. Based on the statements of the interviewees, we concluded that the use of AACS occurred more frequency during face-to-face classes than during the remote teaching period, and that the most accessible device for learning during the pandemic period was the cell phone. Participants considered that the use of AACS during the Covid-19 pandemic was important in communicative acts with children, however, it could have been more effective if they had had the technological resources available during the isolation period. Thus, the recommendations focus on specific practical and periodic training in AACS for teachers, and a greater availability of technological resources in order to guarantee inclusion. |
