Do politicamente correto à cultura de cancelamento (2000-2022): um desafio às democracias liberais

Abstract

A presente dissertação tem por objetivo delinear a evolução do politicamente correto e a sua relação com uma cultura de cancelamento no Ocidente, considerando o período compreendido entre 2000 e 2022, por forma a compreender de que modo tais movimentos constituem desafios ao regime democrático. Tendo em conta a dificuldade de definição dos dois termos, começamos por analisar a história do politicamente correto e as práticas que comprometem os seus princípios, nomeadamente a de cultura de cancelamento. Avançamos depois para a compreensão de como tais conceitos questionam princípios fundamentais do regime liberal democrático e de como parecem despertar instintos autoritários, convocando restrições crescentes às liberdades, nomeadamente à liberdade de expressão. Por último, analisamos exemplos práticos que concorrem para responder à pergunta de investigação: conduziu o politicamente correto a uma cultura de cancelamento que ameaça a democracia liberal? Respondemos positivamente a esta pergunta a partir de uma análise qualitativa: consideramos não só aqueles exemplos, como das entrevistas realizadas aos Professores Doutores André Barata, André Azevedo Alves e Nuno Palma.

This dissertation aims to outline the evolution of political correctness and its relationship with cancel culture in the West, considering the period between 2000 and 2022, in order to understand how such movements constitute challenges to the democratic regime. Given the difficulty of defining the two terms, we begin by analyzing the history of political correctness and the practices that compromise its principles, namely the cancel culture. We then move on to the understanding of how such concepts question fundamental principles of the liberal democratic regime and how they seem to awaken authoritarian instincts, calling for increasing restrictions on freedoms, namely freedom of expression. Finally, we analyze practical examples that contribute to answer the research question: has political correctness led to a culture of cancellation that threatens liberal democracy? We answered positively to this question based on a qualitative analysis: we considered not only those examples, but also the interviews carried out with Professors André Barata, André Azevedo Alves and Nuno Palma.
