A biodiversidade é
nomeadamente o azoto inorgânico dissolvido, o oxigénio dissolvido, a temperatura máxima, a
Especificamente, a dispersão funcional
Freshwaters are among the most dynamic ecosystems with the highest biodiversity on Earth, but at the same time they are the most endangered. Biodiversity can be defined as the variability of life, which includes the composition, the structure, and the functions ensured by biological communities. Natural ecosystems are under pressure from multiple stressors, which may have interactive or additive effects, and this is an emerging topic in ecology. The objective of this study was to evaluate the influence of multiple stressors on the taxonomic and functional diversity of benthic macroinvertebrates in river ecosystems. The study area includes 50 sampling sites across three hydrographic basins of the north Portugal (Lima, Cávado and Ave rivers). The sampling of macroinvertebrates and environmental variables was carried out between September and October of 2020. The major stressors were identified, namely the dissolved inorganic nitrogen, dissolved oxygen, maximum temperature, shade, and current velocity. The stressors resulted only in additive effects on the responses of biodiversity metrics. Functional diversity was more sensitive to stressors then taxonomic diversity. Functional dispersion had a different response to the stressors than the other metrics. This study (1) allowed us to identify which stressors are predominant in the rivers of northwest Portugal, (2) emphasized the need to assess the impacts of multiple stressors simultaneously in freshwater ecosystems, (3) highlighted the potential of the different components of biodiversity to provide complementary ecological information, and (4) emphasized the importance of functional diversity metrics, as they can contribute to the identification of stressors and to better understand the mechanisms underlying the structure of biological communities. |
