parâmetros (combustível, topologia do terreno e condições climatéricas) que influenciam a propagação
propagação do fogo. Forest fires as a natural phenomenon or due to human negligence cause, particularly during the summer season, the devastation of extensive forest areas all over the planet, inflicting damages on both material and human level, due to their unpredictability, speed, and difficulty of control. Portugal, no exception to the rule, is ravaged by countless forest fires every year, with serious social, environmental, and economic consequences. However, there seems to be no success in the measures taken to prevent and combat forest fires, as they continue to be recurrent. The scientific community has mobilized itself to address this problem by developing, at national and international level, numerous research works oriented towards the prevention and combat of uncontrolled and undesirable forest fires. However, fire propagation simulation is still a challenge due to the complexity of the mathematical models involved, the high computational demands and the difficulties in estimating the parameters involved. Therefore, the main objective of this work consists in the development and implementation of a numerical model, with the help of existing mathematical models in the literature. This model should be able to predict the behavior of forest fires, understand the interference of the different parameters (fuel, terrain topology and weather conditions) that influence the fire propagation and the way it can be fought by the different intervention teams. By predicting its behavior and the different directions it may take, fire fighting teams can be strategically allocated in advance, to prevent these phenomena from gaining an undesired extension. In general, the built model presented a set of very satisfactory results, verifying what was supposed to happen in relation to the propagation and intensity of the fire, through the analysis under study. All this, taking into account the nature of the values assigned to the respective input parameters. Furthermore, it was proven that the forest fire propagation does not depend only on one or two determining factors, but rather on an agglomeration of factors. However, of all the factors studied, wind was assumed to be the predominant force with respect to fire propagation. |
