Renewable energy is crucial for the sustainability of the planet, since it is obtained from natural sources that can regenerate themselves and are therefore inexhaustible. Not resulting from the burning of fuel and being inherently non-polluting, its use contributes to mitigate global warming and preserve ecosystems. The focus on photovoltaic solar energy has increased exponentially in recent years, driven by evidence that this renewable energy source can make a major contribution to replacing fossil fuels. However, the long-term sustainability of photovoltaic energy will depend not only on the improvement of photovoltaic energy conversion processes and its widespread use, but also on the development of recycling processes for the high volume of photovoltaic panels that will reach the end of their useful life in the near future. Recycling is a fundamental process for the reuse of valuable materials contained in photovoltaic panels and, at the same time, with this reuse it will be avoided that harmful elements, such as heavy metals, can be spread through the environment, polluting it, as a result of the lack of proper recycling. In this dissertation the importance of reusing the constituents of photovoltaic panels is discussed, and a practical case of the disassembly of a photovoltaic panel is shown, in order to understand which materials can be reused and which materials will have to be recycled, due to the impossibility of reusing them in the construction of a new photovoltaic panel. In addition, the quantities of the recycled materials will be mentioned, also taking into consideration, the weight, the monetary value, but also their ecological value. Finally, a critical opinion on the subject is highlighted, highlighting key aspects of what should be done in the future regarding the reuse of the various constituents of photovoltaic panels. |
