economia portuguesa. Micro, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) predominate in Portugal and play a key role in the economy. SMEs have a characteristic capital structure and considerable financing difficulties. The objective of this study is to understand the capital structure of portuguese SMEs and how the indebtedness factors behave in relation to debt. The capital structure of companies is studied based on four theories from the literature that are the basis for the analysis of indebtedness factors. This analysis is performed by the least squares model and the fixed effects model for a sample of 274 552 firms between 2014 and 2018. It is concluded that when SMEs grow the debt increases, without investment the development becomes more difficult. Turnover, profitability and liquidity have a negative relation with debt. Thus, the factors studied confirm the pecking order capital structure theory. In the different portuguese regions, there are no major changes in the indebtedness factors of SMEs. The capital structure is distinctive in the primary sector compared to the other two sectors of the portuguese economy. |
