A indústria
Artificial leathers are of great importance in the automotive industry because they can be applied to the coating of various components of the automotive interior. However, one of the main problems existing in artificial leather, used in seat construction, is cracking. The industry has been struggling to develop a material composed by 100 % polyvinyl chloride, with crack resistance and at a relatively low cost. It is clearly an audacious and innovative challenge, which requires an in-depth knowledge of the mode and root causes of cracks, as well as the search for new additives to reformulate the base formulation of artificial leather. Thus, it is intended to optimize the product focusing mainly on the raw materials used in the base formulation of artificial leather. In the first part of this work, it was intended to evaluate the efficiency and performance of a new polyvinyl chloride resin in the base formulation of a plastisol already produced in the company and its interaction with different resins. Based on the results, it is possible to infer that the ABC5 formulation presents very promising results, since the elongation value and load at break is higher than that of the other new formulations and the quantity of volatile and semi-volatile organic compounds emitted is slightly lower, translated into lower GC-MS values. In addition, it exhibits a rheological behaviour very similar to the reference and it holds a slightly better odor classification compared to other new formulations. In the second part of this thesis, the influence and performance of different additives was evaluated in the base formulation of a plastisol already produced in the company. In general, it deduces that the incorporation of the minimum quantity of the new additives to deliver similar results to the reference. Otherwise, the incorporation of the maximum quantity provided clearly inferior general performances, mainly the additive D. Based on the results, it is possible to infer that the incorporation of additive A provides very promising results, since the elongation value and load at break is higher than that of the other new formulations and the quantity of volatile substances emitted is slightly lower, translated into higher values of reflectometric fogging. In addition, the plastisols that hold additive A in their formulation exhibit a rheological behaviour very similar to the reference and the odor classification is slightly better. In a way, the ABC5 formulation and additive A may represent innovative alternatives in order to reduce or eradicate cracks in car upholstery. |
