Aquatic fungi play a fundamental role in freshwater ecosystems, as these microorganisms are the main decomposers of organic matter in these highly dynamic lotic environments. Plant litter decomposition performed by these fungi constitutes the link between the allochthonous organic matter of the riverside vegetation and the aquatic biota. Anthropogenic pressures, such as the indiscriminate use of plastics and antibiotics that have aquatic systems as their final destination, can affect this group of fungi and the process of leaf litter decomposition. This study aims to evaluate the impacts of microplastics and the antibiotic ciprofloxacin on the leaf litter decomposition by aquatic fungi, and on their activity and diversity. For this, alder leaves were immersed in a stream to promote microbial colonization and after eleven days the leaves were exposed in microcosms to microplastics (MPs) and ciprofloxacin (CIP), individually or in mixtures. Our study showed that MPs and CIP alter the decomposition process and the composition of fungal community. The impact of these contaminants was more pronounced in the fungal sporulation, where an inhibition was observed with the increase of MPs and CIP concentrations individually and in mixtures. A stimulation of the fungal biomass was observed for treatments with the highest CIP concentration and in mixtures. The β-glucosidase enzyme activity was inhibited at higher CIP concentrations. With the indiscriminate use of these contaminants, impacts on detritivorous food chains may arise, compromising the functioning of freshwater ecosystems. |
