The occurrence of forest fires is one of the main causes of the devastation of the Portuguese forest and, consequently, of the deterioration of the soils where they occur. In recent decades has been a significant increase in cases, causing the destruction of thousands of hectares of forest area annually. Fires leave the soil deprived of its natural cover, exposed to the aggressiveness of rain (water erosion) and other erosive agents, sometimes suffering irreversible damage. The present work is dedicated to study dynamics of water erosion in burned areas through developing a simulator of rainfall. The simulator is capable of enabling the realistic conditions for carrying out similar field tests. The first part of the thesis achieved by an extensive bibliographical research that allowed to frame the study theme, and helped to understand the causes for the high number of forest fires that occur annually in Portugal. The second part, is dedicated to rain simulators: the need for artificial rain, antecedents, evolution of the different models, and their characteristics and valences. The third part included the practical side of this work which include the construction of a portable rain simulator, the various components that make it up, the implemented specific programming, and testing. |
