The main goal of this study is to understand the power of political and social awareness that is generated in street theater performances, especially in an urban context, as well as analyzing the historical development of this phenomena in the contemporary age. This paper attempts to understand what features characterize this artform and how they are pivotal in the realization of a work’s intended goal. Street theater is a theatrical modality practiced around the world by many theater groups that choose the urban environment as their stage. Using the necessary props and facing the challenges that arise during an artistic performance with the city as the backdrop, the majority of these groups use the theatricalization of the real to deal with themes that are often trivialized by society and/or are considered taboo. Due to the setting of the performance the impact on the audience is far greater, and this generates a more thorough reflection on the proposed subject. Based on this principle, the Brazilian theater group Tá na Rua, which had its emergence in the city of Rio de Janeiro – Brazil in 1980, will be presented as the main point of reference. Amidst the chaos of the Brazilian military dictatorship (April 1964- March 1985) the group was born as a form of social and cultural resistance, and lives, to this day, fulfilling its social and artistic function. The political character that the urban space carries will also be discussed, as well as the right that every citizen has to participate in its creation, and the right to explore its artistic potential. |
