A amostra envolveu 114 alunos (59 do género feminino e 55
do género masculino) do 2º ano do Ensino Básico.
Communication Disorders, when not detected, can be the source of several difficulties presented by students, namely in school learning, in different social interactions and in their own behavior. Being the 1st cycle teacher, an active element in the teaching-learning process, as the teacher is the professional who is closest to the child in such an important stage of development, he has a preponderant role in the early detection and intervention of Communication Disorders. For this reason, it is extremely important to use simple, fast, easy to understand and intercept tools that facilitate the identification of these communicative changes as soon as possible. In this sense, this exploratory study analyses the results of the School Age Communication Scale (SACS) - Version for Teachers (Batista, Monteiro, Dias, Azevedo, & Cruz-Santos, 2019) which has three dimensions: Functional Communication, Social Communication and Academic Communication, each with eight items. The sample involved 114 students (59 females and 55 males) from the 2rd years of schooling in the 1st cycle of Basic Education. The results of this study indicate that there are significantly statistical differences in relation to the variable: i) gender in 16 of the 24 items on the scale; ii) mothers' academic qualifications in 12 of the 24 items on the scale; iv) academic qualifications of parents in 10 of the 24 items on the scale; v) school performance, in the subjects of Portuguese language and Mathematics, in relation to the 24 items of the scale, showing an influence of these variables on the students’ performance on the SACS - Version for Teachers. In order to analyze the reliability of the scale, Cronbach's Alpha was applied, which presented a value of .978. According to Field (2005) it can be concluded that the items on the scale indicate a very good reliability, reason why it can be considered the valid instrument for the screening of communicative difficulties of school age students. This study shows that the implementation of a screening at the beginning of each school year would allow to screen school-age students with possible difficulties in terms of communicative skills, contributing to an effective intervention. This study shows and reinforces the importance of using the screening instrument at the national level, so that it can contribute as an instrument for screening, identifying and monitoring students in an educational context, who attend the 1st Cycle of Basic Education. |
