Perspetiva de tempo e construção de significado na vida: o papel da solidão

Abstract

Conceitos como perspetiva de tempo futuro, regulação emocional e significado na vida são relacionados na teoria da seletividade socio-emocional. Esta teoria conceptualizada por Carstensen num estudo de Hicks et al. (2012) propõe a existência de relações inversas entre perspetiva de tempo (PT) e significado na vida (SV) e relações diretas entre afeto positivo e significado na vida. O presente estudo teve como principal objetivo confirmar a relação entre PT e construção do SV, em jovens adultos e em adultos idosos; um segundo objetivo foi explorar o papel que o repertório emocional, a solidão e a diferenciação emocional tinham nessa relação. Participaram neste estudo um total de 103 jovens adultos e 117 adultos idosos. Foram feitas análises correlacionais. Os dados confirmam que uma maior PT se associa a uma menor procura de significado e menor regulação emocional em ambos os grupos de idade. Por sua vez, uma maior regulação emocional associa-se a uma maior procura de significado e a uma maior diferenciação emocional, igualmente em ambos os grupos. Contudo, a relação entre a PT e afeto positivo, ao contrário do previsto por Hicks et al. (2012) é positiva e não negativa em ambos os grupos de idade.

Concepts such as future time perspective, emotional regulation and meaning in life are related in the theory of socio-emotional selectivity. This theory conceptualized by Carstensen in a study by Hicks et al. (2012) proposes the existence of inverse relationships between perspective of time (PT) and meaning in life (SV) and direct relationships between positive affect and meaning in life. The main objective of this study was to confirm the relationship between PT and the construction in young adults and elderly adults; a second objective was to explore the role that the emotional repertoire, loneliness and emotional differentiation had in this relationship. A total of 103 young adults and 117 elderly adults participated in this study. Correlational analyses were performed. The data confirm that a higher PT is associated with a lower demand for meaning and lower emotional regulation in both age groups. In turn, greater emotional regulation is associated with a greater search for meaning and greater emotional differentiation, equally in both groups. However, the relationship between PT and positive affection, contrary to what was predicted by Hicks et al. (2012) is positive and not negative in both age groups.
