influenciar as dinâmicas urbanas.
do território.
The elevator is a fundamental device in making vertical architecture feasible. A means of transport that triggered new paths for construction. In addition to an element reserved for the functioning of the building, the elevator is also an infrastructure capable of serving the organization of a territory. Considering this brief characterization of the mobility device, the elevator, as we know it today, resulted from a long evolution process, becoming an element that is part of the daily life of men. Developed in two parts, the work begins with a brief presentation of the technical system and the various dynamics, both public and private. The elevator is first introduced to the city responding to mobility challenges (within a territory and inside a building), and due to its improvement it has triggered multiple consequences. Buildings and cities gain new levels and evidently new dimensions, being able to serve the modern men and face the limitations that territories present. But, at the same time the system is democratized and trivialized, its is also recognized, its affirmation as a fundamental tool of the big capitalist corporations in search for economic promotion. In cities, vertical architecture can give visibility to inequalities and contrasts between classes, a characteristic that is becoming more and more noticed in their organization. In the second part, the work is developed about the journey of the elevator within the scope of the verticalization process of the city of Porto. Although the contribution of the elevator in the design of the city’s skyline can be considered subtle, it was been identified moments and events when it was able to influence the urban dynamics. It is proposed to look at the past (Porto Moderno) and the present (Porto Contemporâneo), and at the same time establish bridges with visions of the future (Porto Fantástico) that promise the introduction of new dynamics, which benefit environmental and social aspects, but also offers a more inclusive city, believing that the elevator will play an important role in these new processes. The work focuses on the theme of verticality (specifically in the city of Porto), in an attempt to understand how the elevator responds to the dynamics of the territory. It seeks to highlight a new way of living and inhabiting the city, demonstrating that this device is still a viable solution and above all, capable of provoking a new reading of the city and detaching it from the car and from horizontal mobility. |
