The consumption and production of energy are associated with high environmental impacts. The sector of buildings is a major contributor to this impact. This happens mostly due to the existence of nowadays comfort patterns, that are more and more demanding and to an excessive growth rate of the population. The consumption of energy in the residential buildings is mostly associated to the heating and the cooling of the indoor environment. One solution to reduce this consumption is the implementation of phase-change materials and technologies for thermal energy storage in order to obtain a larger economic efficiency and thermal comfort. The number of studies about this thematic have increased for the past years. These studies have demonstrated the benefits of this type of technologies. This dissertation aims to study phase-change materials (PCM). Additionally it is intended to perform an economic viability analysis when applying PCMs in a building located in the North of Portugal. To do so, eight PCMs with different temperatures of fusion were analysed in a building of simple geometry. The case study was analysed in different zones of the North of Portugal (Bragança, Montalegre, Porto and Vila Real). During the development of the work dynamic software tools were used, namely, Design Builder and EnergyPlus. In a first phase the type and the quantity of PCMs for the four zones of study were analysed. Then, the constructive solution and support element with the best behavior in the presence of PCMs were analysed. In the last phase, the PCMs with the best thermal performance and the best constructive solution were analysed together in the case study. The economic analysis was performed for the optimized solution for the location of Porto. In addition a thermal comfort analysis was also conducted for this scenario. In the study the relevance of the incorporation of the PCMs in the envelope of the building is verified. This solution allows to obtain reductions in the energy needs and it also brings advantages in the thermal comfort point of view. However, the economic viability analysis shown that the investment cost of this material is not easily recovered. In summary, the PCMs implemented in the analysed building presents high benefits in terms of energy and comfort. |
