Cultural diplomacy is a type of public diplomacy and soft power that aims to promote cultural ties of understanding and trust between countries and peoples, in order to allow the diffusion of a cultural image that can influence a foreign audience and make it more receptive to a country's culture and politics. The existence of a more favorable view in relation to a country, in theory, will make the target audience of cultural diplomacy encourage greater bilateral collaboration and at the same time mitigate possible conflicts. It could be argued that this type of diplomacy has a very positive influence in promoting a harmonious and stable international environment. It is therefore not surprising that a systematic promotion of cultural diplomacy is a growing concern among states, with Portugal and China certainly not being the exception. In this way, my dissertation will aim to defend the importance of this promotion, demonstrating the constant presence, influence and benefits of cultural diplomacy in the development of contemporary bilateral relations between both countries. |
