An initial Free Recall seems important to obtain accurate information from witnesses and is used in appropriate investigative interviews such as the Cognitive Interview. However, recent studies have shown that clustering strategies (Category Clustering Recall and Location Clustering Recall), in which the cues used to guide the report are provided by the interviewer, increased the amount of information recalled compared to the Free Recall. Considering the benefits of self-generated cues in memory for words, the main objective of this study was testing its effectiveness when inserted in these strategies. Participants watched a video of a crime and were interviewed 48 hours later according to one of the following strategies: Free Recall, provided Category Clustering Recall, self-generated Category Clustering Recall, provided Location Clustering Recall or self-generated Location Clustering Recall. Additionally, different cognitive variables were measured that could influence the report, but only working memory capacity influenced the recall of incorrect details and accuracy. The results showed no differences in amount of information recalled and accuracy of recall between the conditions. However, accuracy was high for all groups. Thus, this study reveals the existence of techniques as effective as a free report, being available for use by the interviewer according to the needs of the police investigation. |
