Non-profit organisation sustainability is a wide concept that suggests a balance between the financial domain and the achievement of the organisation mission. The available literature is not unanimous about this theme and, given the relevance of Private Institutions for Social Solidarity (charities) in our current society, it is mandatory to fully understand the concept and find tools that allow these institution managers to provide the service with maximum efficiency and effectiveness. The main purpose of this study is to associate the organisational and management characteristics of Portuguese Private Institutions for Social Solidarity to indicators of sustainability of these institutions. In order to fulfil this goal, a quantitative methodology was used, and a survey was applied to members of the direction and technical direction of 246 Portuguese Private Institutions for Social Solidarity. From the results, it is possible to conclude that organisational sustainability depends on elements that are related to the organisation and those answering the survey themselves: target area; number of volunteers; and also to all the success factors under analysis: people, business model, culture, operations and strategy. The factors of strategy, business model, culture and people, as well as the number of volunteers account for the sustainability of these organisations. Furthermore, the results show that an IPSS is as much sustainable as: more complete and effective is its strategic plan; more diversified and stable are its income sources; more value and support it provides to its employees, volunteers and clients; more volunteers it can aggregate and more efficient and effective its recruitment policy as well as the attribution of tasks and responsibilities to the collaborators. The contribution of this study to the institutions involved is presented, more specifically, in the form of sustainability diagnosis and organisational and management practices that lead to resource maximum profitability. |
