continuam a ocorrer no meio subterrâneo.
Throughout the world, the health of millions of people is threatened by exposure to drinking water that exceeds the recommended limit of the concentration in arsenic (As) of 10 mg/L. The present study evaluates the presence of arsenic in surface and groundwaters surrounding a mining zone subject to environmental recovery in 2007. To this end, it was studied the mining zone of Freixeda, located in Portugal, in the region of Trás-os-Montes, municipality of Mirandela, in the district of Bragança, encomplaced in the gold Metalogenic Province of the NW of the Iberian Peninsula. The geological context where the Freixeda mine occurs is, as a result, favorable to the presence of metals and metalloids in the waters of the region through the natural course of the water-rock interaction processes that continue to occur in the underground environment. The galleries immersed and the presence of tailings, which despite being waterproofed during environmental recovery, and which recently suffered new prospecting work, affect the quality of surface and groundwater. In surface waters it is possible to identify a spatial chemical evolution along the Ribeira da Freixeda, which translates by an increase in SO4 2-, Ca and Mg in the vicinity of the influence of the mine. This evolution dissipates progressively with the increase of the distance to the mine, as well as, with the increase of the flow after the confluence with the River Tua, where the ions Na and HCO3 - predominate. The concentration of arsenic in surface and underground water varies considerably for a range of pH value between 6 and 8, in which in waters with more acidic pH values, arsenic concentrations tend to be smaller. The electrical conductivity (EC) varies widely in surface waters (EC 64-651 μS/cm), decreasing significantly to about 1/3, up to three months after the rainy season, while in the groundwater the value is higher (EC 200-800 μS/cm), being in the deep aquifer where the highest values (CE 749-800 μS/cm) were recorded. In the region of the Freixeda mine, the highest concentrations of arsenic are found in groundwater with a registered maximum of 1,434 mg/L, but surface waters also exceed the legal maximum values allowed for human consumption waters. Based on the chemical speciation of arsenic it is possible to verify that the pentavalent arsenic predominates in most waters, but trivalent arsenic has greater expression in the relationship with total arsenic in summer periods and in reduced environments, or low oxidizing conditions. The environmental conditions most favorable to the occurrence of high concentrations of As in the groundwater of the region under study are: pH values between 6,6 and 7,4; reducing environments, or low oxidizing conditions, fluoride concentration greater than 1,5 mg/L; and high concentration of Fe in solution. To better understand the mobility of arsenic, regular monitoring in waters related to arsenic content and its speciation, associated with the studies already carried out, would allow investigating the interactions between the solid phase of the aquifer and groundwater/surface waters, enabling a prediction of hydrogeochemical changes in the future, such as an increase in the levels of trivalent arsenic, fluoride and iron in solution. |
