Cartografar os territórios invisíveis do ciberespaço. A presença de Portugal nas redes globais de informação.

Abstract

Este artigo pretende ser um contributo para a identificação das cidades portuguesas melhor posicionadas no espaço de fluxos que caracteriza a sociedade da informação, ou seja o espaço abstracto que segundo Castells (1992) se estrutura em torno de nós que organizam as redes globais de troca de fluxos de capital e de informação. Reconhecendo que a Internet exerce actualmente uma influência determinante na estruturação destes fluxos, pretendemos apresentar e questionar a validade de alguns indicadores, e das respectivas fontes, enquanto importantes contributos para cartografar a geografia da Internet, e especialmente o padrão da difusão espacial desta tecnologia por entre as diferentes cidades e municípios portugueses.

This article intends to contribute to the discussion regarding which Portuguese cities are best positioned on the space of flows that characterizes the information societies. According to Castells (1992), this abstract space needs nodal points to organize the networks of exchange of capital, decisions and information flows. Recognizing the major role of the Internet to structure these global flows, we will present and question the pertinence of some types of measurements, regarding the task of mapping and understanding the geography of Internet, and more specifically the variations in diffusion rates among Portuguese municipalities and cities.
