O Estudo
O Estudo 2 - Statistical methods in
O Estudo 3 - Differential effect of university entrance score on first-year
O Estudo 4 - Multilevel modeling
of persistence in higher education - analisa a associação da persistência no 1º ano com a
O Estudo 5 - Personal and institutional factors’ impact on persistence in higher education -
The Thesis is developed over six studies, based on quantitative methods, and it focuses on students’ success in higher education. The study 1 - Reflections on the value-added model - explores the link to educational policy and shows that the Portuguese knowledge production is scarce in view of the potentialities of the subject. The study 2 - Statistical methods in higher education research - identifies the statistical methods and outcome variables considered in Higher Education (HE) research over the last twenty years. Regression models - classical and multilevel - appear as the most applied and the phenomena most often studied by researchers are academic performance and abandonment or persistence. The remaining studies involve the analysis and modeling of data referring to the students of the University of Minho enrolled for the 1st time in the 1st year in 2015/16. The study 3 - Differential effect of university entrance score on first-year students' academic performance in Portugal - presents evidence that the association between the university entrance score and the academic performance of the students at the end of the first year, varies randomly across the courses, controlling for the sociodemographic, educational trajectory and motivational variables. We applied the variance components model and the random coefficients model, both with two levels, i.e students grouped in courses. The results suggest that the university entrance score is the strongest predictor of academic achievement, that 34% of the performance variability is due to differences between courses and 80% of that variability is explained by the model. The study 4 - Multilevel modeling of persistence in higher education - analyzes the relationship between 1st year students’ persistence with their schooling trajectory and the transition to HE, controlling for the students’ socioeconomic status, age and gender. We applied the multilevel logistic regression model. The results suggest that failure in primary, elementary or lower secondary education has a long-term effect, i.e., the probability of persistence is influenced by grade repetition even controlling for university entrance score. Admission of the student to his/her 1st option program, as well as entry score are also associated with the probability of persistence. In addition, older and male students appear to be less likely to persist. The study 5 - Personal and institutional factors' impact on persistence in higher education - deepens the analysis of individual factors that influence persistence. The results suggest a strong influence of study methods as well as an important role of expectations in the persistence of older students. This study also tests the differential effect of the university entrance score, and the random effect across courses was found. The study 6 - Access and performance in HE in Portugal: issues of gender, sociocultural status, academic program, expectations, program choice and age of students - analyzes these characteristics through various statistical methods. The main results suggest that gender, sociocultural status and the schooling trajectory are associated to the choice of program, the university entry score and the admission option. No association was found between sociocultural status and persistence. The student’ sociocultural status does not seem to influence the decision to abandon, suspend or transfer program. |
