dc.description.abstract | In Portugal, comparative studies regarding the psychological impact of different types of accidents and its vicitms’ sex, are rare which emphasized the need for research in this domain. This study aimed to know the prevalence, severity and impairment of different types of accidents and to compare psychopathologic symptoms and protective factors, according to accident type and victims’ sex. A sample of 127 victims of accidents (road-related and others) was selected from an orthopaedics consult and an online questionnaire. Participants filled out: PCL-5, BSI, Brief COPE and the Social Support Scale. Results showed road accidents as the most prevalent, severe, and disturbing. No significant differences were found between victims regarding psychological symptoms and protective factors. Within victims of road accidents, total social support was negatively correlated with psychopathologic symptomatology, with exception of anxiety. Coping through emotional avoidance was positively correlated with all psychopathological variables. No significant differences were found between male and female participants, regardless accident type. This study not only broadened the existing knowledge about the impact of different types of accidents, but also emphasized the importance of future research analysing separately each type of accidents. | por |
