This dissertation in History analises the ways that Macao reacted to the Opium War (1836-1842) and how it adapted to the new political challenges in the Pearl River Delta. The research is based on the analysis of translated Chinese, Portuguese and English sources regarding Macao’s position regarding the Opium War (1839-1842). The two main points I analyse are Macau’s representations of the war and its reaction in the aftermath of the founding of an English colony with more favorable conditions for international trade, Hong Kong. |
