Initially returns to education were only seen through the skills acquired and developed by the individual who invested in their education and had better employment opportunities that, consequently, led to better salaries. With the increase of studies and interest in this area, the rendibilty of education has gained two new amplitudes, the extension of these economic gains for non-economic (non-pecuniary) gains and the transposition of individual gains for the whole society. In Portugal, education has been an area that has demanded much attention and investment from the Government due to its historical backwardness, but in the 20th century the weight of being one of the OECD countries with the less educated population has slowed down the possible gains of education. With the goals outlined in Portugal 2020, the measures taken over the past years by the Government have resulted in the most educated population ever in Portugal. So, in this work, we intend to study some of the possible gains from this increase in schooling of the Portuguese population, not only at the level of the individual but at the level of the whole society, analyzing not only economic indicators but also non pecuniary ones. |
